Novo Nordisk Names AWS Its AI Partner for Drug Discovery

A new London hub pairs AWS cloud and AI tools with Novo Nordisk data to speed obesity drug research.

Novo Nordisk has named Amazon Web Services as its preferred cloud provider and strategic artificial intelligence partner, deepening a relationship aimed at compressing timelines across obesity and chronic disease drug development. The companies announced the agreement from Novo Nordisk's headquarters in Bagsvaerd, Denmark, describing it as groundwork for future medicines rather than a one-off technology purchase.

At the centre of the partnership sits a new co-innovation hub in London, where engineers and scientists from both organisations are working side by side to apply artificial intelligence tools to Novo Nordisk's proprietary datasets. The stated goal is to shorten the path between identifying a drug target and dosing the first human volunteer, a stage that has historically consumed years of laboratory and regulatory groundwork before any clinical benefit becomes visible.

Novo Nordisk said it will draw on cloud services built specifically for drug discovery to identify promising targets, connect genomic, imaging, and clinical datasets, and inform how future clinical trials are designed. The company pointed to measurable early gains from its existing cloud relationship. Generative AI tools already deployed internally have reduced clinical documentation time and are now used by more than 25,000 employees across operations spanning more than eighty countries.

The agreement builds on an artificial intelligence partnership the company struck with a separate technology provider earlier this year, extending a growing stack of tools that now spans early research through commercial operations. Novo Nordisk said it will continue working with other retail and healthcare arms of its cloud partner's parent company to reshape how obesity and chronic disease therapies eventually reach patients.

Executives were careful to temper expectations. Concrete drug development outcomes from the expanded collaboration, they cautioned, remain to be demonstrated over time.
